The two honest methods
Even split: grand total ÷ people. Fast, social, and fair when orders were similar. Proportional: each person's items scale to the real bill (covering tax and shared apps) and the same tip rate applies. The method should match the meal — even splits for comparable orders, proportional for the $90-surf-and-turf vs $18-salad table.
The shared-apps problem
Shared appetizers belong to everyone: either split their cost evenly first and add individual items on top, or (the 30-second version) scale everyone's individual items up to the bill total — the proportional method does exactly this. What is NOT fair is the person who "doesn't remember" absorbing nothing while three people quietly cover them.
Ending the tip debate
Decide the tip rate before the check arrives ("18% on the whole bill, even split?"), and the grand total ÷ people line settles it. The social cost of asking for fairness is highest right when everyone is tired and the check is sitting there — ten seconds of calculator removes the whole negotiation.
